I have a question about using BEX 9.0 with an exchange 5.5 box. Backing up the Information store as a whole we get speeds of 796 MB/M. What is killing us is when we backup the individual mailboxes, it goes all the way down to 50 MB/M. Is there anything we can do about this, or is this the nature of the beast?

That is the nature of the beast. Actually, the throughput you are getting is pretty good. Mailbox backups use MAPI protocol to enumerate each mailbox and each mail message one-at-a-time. MAPI was not designed for server-type operations like this. If you are using 9.0, you can now do incremental or differential backups of the mailboxes. Something that could not be done in past versions. Only do full backups of mailboxes on weekends.

Good luck!
