Exchange backup performance

Hello,

I have a customer running an online backup of exchange 2003 via the HP Data Protector product. The backup product provides an API into exchange therefore exchange will be doing its normal online backup routine via the HP product. The process works fine, however performance is much better during the day than at night.

We can obviously perform good backups but we cant find a reason why the exchange nightly backup is always slower than if you run it during the day. Strange as users will be on during the day.

There is no exchange maintenance going from what they tell me.

Can anyone else provide some possible reasons?
