I'm new to Backup Exec 8.6 so please be patient. When setting up the selections for the backup, I want to ensure that I get all of the Exchange data. I select the information store to be backup, but in the event of restoring this will only restore the whole of Exchange.

I want to be able to restore individual mailboxes so I need to select another option. I have two options it seems. I can back up the M:\ drive where the mail boxes are located, and I also have the option of Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes. What is the difference between the two?

Also, when I have previously backed up mailboxes, it seemed to take a long time to perform.

Exchange Mailboxes is what you want to backup is you want to restore mailboxes.

The M drive is the thing you want to back up or touch or virus scan if you want your mail server to fail.

Google for IFSdrive.cmd and get rid of the M drive. It was not a good idea at the time. Rule of thumb: Step away from the M drive.

I wasn't aware that BE 8.6 even had the option to do brick level exchange backups. As far as I know you can only do t he whole information store.

Yes you can backup information store and mailboxes at brick level with 8.6. You need to be backing up the information store at minimum for a disaster recovery. THe mailbox is just a added bonus if you want to restore individual items.

M : drive you dont backup since the 8.6 exchange agent will grab this information

The Exchange agent has been allowing brick level since v7.0 if not earlier (I started using it at v7 at any rate!).
