I am running exchange server 5.5 sp3 on NT 4.0 sp3. I currently have no tape backup and wish to install it. As I understand it, when exchange is installed, mods are made to the nt backup program to allow exchange partitions to be backed up. Is this true? Will I need 3rd party software to do a reliable backup of exchange?

If I install an hp superstor t20xi, will it do the job? Is this device compatible with NT? The MS HCL says no, the HP list says the t20xe is compatible and the tech rep at hp says the t20xi is compatible even though it is not listed.!!

Does anyone have any guidlines that I could follow to insure that I get what I think I will be getting in backup?

Thanks. Lynn

If you want to be able to restore Exchange email by individual mailboxes (as opposed to restoring the ENTIRE Exchange database) you will have to go with a 3rd party product like ArcserveIT 6.6 and get their Exchange Backup agent too. It is not particularly cheap but does a great job and is the standard for NT and Exchange backup.

You can check if it is comaptible with certain HP tape drive, etc. models on their web site at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> sure to get and install at least the basic service packs for the version you buy too--the service packs fix a lot of bugs for Arcserve.

Windows NT 2000 magazine just had a good write up on this. The easy way if you can pull it off is to shut down exchange and do a straight backup. If not then they offer what files should be backed up, when and why. Very useful article. I use Backup Exec myself.

Mike
