We're using Netbackup 3.4 After following Veritas installation instructions to the letter, the Exchange plug-in refuses to be seen by the master server which is a unix box. Now we're considering migrating the master server to a windows box. Does anyone know how to configure the unix master server so that it sees the Exchange server? We also experienced a problem with Veritas crashing the Exchange machine and had to pull it off entirely. Could the two problems be related?

What is your configuration? We are using Solaris as our master backing up 200+ servers, 10 Exchange 2000 servers and no problems.

Perhaps you can give more details about your configuration and then we may be able to help you.

As for going to W2K servers as a master, I would recommend against it. Over 2 years ago we were in the same situation and were a very strong NT/2000 shop. I can now say that today I am glad we are running netbackup on a Sun box and not windows.

Apologies for the lack of details. We're running Exchange 5.5 enterprise, sp4 on a win2k advanced server, sp3 (dual 550 P-III, 1gb RAM). The Master Server (for Veritas) is an Ultra 10 running Solaris 7, attached to an L1000 dlt robotic tape library.

When yopu were installing the Master server, did it ask you what other clients/options you wanted installed? This is where you specify what Netbackup options you have. You could also run the commmand get_license_key from usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd. You will then be prompted for options, such as add , change, delete, list, etc...I would list you active keys to make sure that you have the Exchange Client active. If you don't you can always add the license key here.

However, if what you mean is that the exchange server cannot see your Solaris box, then perhaps you may have a DNS issue. Netbackup uses both full and short name for a server lookup. To make sure that your Master server can see the exchange box, run nslookup server_name if you get nothing, check that you have configred DNS properly (/etc/resolv.conf). I would also run this command from the Exchange box tomake sure it can resolve to the master server.
