Hello we have a company that has just called us, and told us that they had an employee embezeling a lot of money from them. They have since gotten rid of the employee. They were using a local isp for there email, and are wanting to go to and exchange setup. They want all there mail done inhouse. One of there problems, was that she was in contact with people through email and the isp says they have no archiving on there email servers. So the big question I am wondering is, will exchange archive emails other then locally pst or ost files. Or do I need to get a third party app to do this. If I do, any recomendations.

I think my first message may have been a little cryptic. Basically after talking with them, they want to be able to have access to every email that comes in and goes out of the exchnage server. They have of course been reading the news and heard that some of thease major companies have been doing this. MSN, Yahoo, Google. And they want the same.

I primarily use GFI's MailArchiver and also two hosted products: MXLogic and ExchangeDefender both provide spam filtering, but they also provide archiving of all mail in an off-site database that can be searched via web interface. Both prefer to deal with partners rather than the general public, so if you are interested in the latter solutions, find a reseller who can get you set up.

Journaling adds processing to the Exchange server, adds storage requirements to Exchange server, and only does envelope archiving (it doesn't grab everything).

Make sure you're prepared for that.

Disclaimer: I work for an ISV that has an archiving product. But this is not meant to be a sales pitch.

And if you do any kind of research, you'll find out that .pst files are the scourge of the earth and certainly should not be used when discovery, compliance, and/or archiving is needed.
