We have Exchange 5.5, a W2K box running SMTP service, and the Mercury SMTP_S and SMPTE_C modules. Mercury acts as a mail gateway forwarding all incoming to Exchange and does not run POP.

User's Outlook profiles are set up to get mail from Exchange, and send mail to the W2K box, which then delivers to outside.

However, when we try to use Mercury to *send* mail, not just receive, the Exchange MTA bounces the email back and reports that "user@domain.com" is not recognized, as if it were an Exchange, not an Internet, account. Mercury is configured as Ougoing in an Outlook profile, and SMTP delivery options are in the proper order in the profile.

The Mercury display and logs indicate the message was received and processed(?), yet it is never delivered. Our authoratative DNS has an A record for Mercury.

Tried adding the Mercury IP address to the Exchange Internet Mail service>Specify by email domain but same result. Seems like Exchange MTA has no problem with another Microsoft SMTP box, but will not send to Mercury.

Full relaying is allowed on Mercury, since of course the only destination is Exchange, so that's not it.

Oddly, telnetting to Mercury and sending to the outside does not result in delivery either, so maybe these are two seperate issues?

Maybe I just answered my own question, since the only domain configured in Mercury is the Exchange server domain.

If anyone has tackled this problem, could you respond to this post? We wanted to setup some auto responses for customer inquiries.

Thanks.
