OK, I realize that it is not uncommon for Exchange to be installed on a separate server from the DC, but this is the first time I've tried to work on such a configuration. When I go into the AD Users and Computers on the DC, there are no Exchange tabs on a users property sheet. It looks to me like the AD doesn't know Exchange exists. Is this right?? How do I get the two to talk to each other?

Isn't the Exchange piece an add-on to AD Users and Computers? That add-on may not have been installed on the DC.

You have to install the Management tools for Exchange on the DC. This also requires the Exchange prerequisites to be installed as well (NNTP, SMTP, IIS, etc).

Once you have the tools installed, you have to install all Exchange service packs as well, so that they match what's on the Exchange server.
