exchange 5.5 recovery from *.edb files ?

Exchange server 5.5 server crashed we had a backup but only as of the start of the year which tells you to always double check your backups fortunately we still have the hard drive where exchange database files where store this drive was corrupted but i managed to restore the exchange database files priv.edb and pub.edb my question is can i install a fresh copy of 5.5 and copy or import this files to the new exchange copy and get the info that i need from them any help is greatly apprecited meanwhile i will look at microsoft site to see if any info is there

Exchange databases are specific to a site and an organisation. You can restore the priv and pub.edb to a differently named server if the Exchange installation on it is exactly the same (Org, Site, Recipients container, s/w, SP and patch level) as the server the backup was taken from - indeed, this is the recovery server method of restoring deleted items from a backup tape documented in the MS Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery whitepaper (availbale from the MS website).

Don't try and restore the dir.edb, though, unless your server has exactly the same name as the server the backup was taken from, or Exchange won't work. Of course, you can't duplicate the same name server in the same domain unless you take the old one away, or build the new one off the production network, but then you need a copy of the SAM as well or else the authentication of the service accounts will be different...
