My nt40 exchange server crashed. I did an online exchange restore to an win2k server. everything appears to be correct. when i open exchange admin, and connections, all my internet mail settings are correct, but i dont have the option to start the Internet mail service under services? Does win2k not use this service? does smtp need to be installed on the win2k. this is a mail server only install.

Nope - the IMS is part of Exchange 5.5, and has nothing to do with W2K. I would suggest removing the internet mail service, and then adding it again, and hope it adds the service.

Here is a demo of an online restore:

May be you will find a step which you are missing there.
