I'm having trouble getting Exchange 5.5 installed on a Win2k member server on my WinNT 4.0 domain. I keep running into the error addressed in KB article Q246286. This is followed by another error stating that I don't have permissions to perform the action. (Checking the script file where the error occurs indicates that it is an attempted shutdown of the SA.)
Since you can't uninstall Exchange 5.5 when the install fails, I have formatted and reinstalled Win2k 5 times in the past 2 days.
I have tried a variety of configurations: with and without terminal services, with and without IIS, etc. I have disabled SMTP and NNTP when IIS was installed. I've printed out and read a ream of white papers, none of which proved useful.
I have made the Exchange admin account an administrator on the local machine. I have logged into the domain as an administrator. I've done everything that I could find any reference whatsoever of being a "gotcha" in this type of installation, with no luck.
What am I missing? Everything I've been able to find this morning in this newsgroup indicates that this should be a very straightforward installation. So why isn't it working? What am I missing?
Please, any ideas are welcome. I have to have this thing up by noon tomorrow (Sep 26th) and I do NOT want to put it on another NT server if I can possibly avoid it. (I'm in the process of converting all of my member servers to Win2k, but the corporate Net Admin won't let me upgrade the PDC/BDC to Win2k because they're waiting to do a corporate-wide changeover to ADS at a later date.
Thanks.
