Exchange 5.5 on NT4 Working with server 2000

We are our upgrading our NT4 server to server 2000 our exchange server is on NT4 (separate) I am asumming they will work together. When I tested it I got the exchange server to sync with the Primary Domain controller and get the user names but exchange kept saying it could not find itself (adrian_mail) what am I missing. I did have the exchange server (adrian_mail) listed in the active directoy as a domain controller.
