Exchange 5.5 Information Store Recovery 1

Hi everyone,

I really do hope someone can help us - we are very depressed!

We have backed up our Exchange Directory, Exchange Information Store, and Exchange Mailboxes. The Directory backup was successful. The Info Store was also successful and had a size of approx 2.6GB. However the Mailbox backup was not successful and not all the mail boxes backed up. when the backup was done we were using BE 7.5 and now we've ugraded to BE 8.6. We tried to recover the information store only and it seemed to work but then we got an error of "1105". Is this caused by not upgrading the coorect service pack for exchange? Assuming we put the Information Store back onto the server is this enough to recover our mail as it was at the time the back up was done??? We don't mind if we lose a few weeks worth of mail but we really want to get back the 2.6GB of the information store!

I feel we are really close and I would really appreciate someone helping our tired legs across the finishing line!!!!!PLEASE!!!! I will be forever in your debt!!!!!

So what do you think you backed up? Have you formatted the server without checking if you had a proper backup?

When restoring Exchange, always have the SAME org, site and server name, the same service pack on NT and Exchange as previously.

If you can get the info store back (priv.edb) it should be possible to use the command line utilities to reindex the store and get you going. I have yet to see one that didn't come back although see my above comments as a caveat to that.

We have got back the mail as of it was 3 weeks ago but we are having problems getting the fresh mail down!? we can see our mail as it was on 11th August 2001 but we cannot see any new mail arriving in outlook on the server. You mentioned reindexing the store? How can we get our new mail coming down into the outlook accounts? HELP!

IT;s hard to understand what the problem is exactly.. do you mean that you can't recieve any emails from outside now? Check you DNS servers are correct.


If you mean that you want to get all the emails back from the time your old server went down, then I guess you need the log files that were on the old server..

Look for the microsoft white paper on backing up/recovering exchange 5.5, on the microsoft web site..
 
If you get mail locally then you probably have used a different IP and thus external mail should be NDR'ing until you update your MX record. Do you get any errors when trying to send mail to an account on Exchange from yahoo? Dan
