Hi all, what is open relay on Exchange 5.5 used for, plus I've been told to turn it off, why and how?

Kind Regards

Andy

An open relay on the Exchange server simply means that anybody can use your email server to send email!

You can simply telnet onto the server on port 25 and send email to anybody you want, FROM anybody you want - it's the sort of thing that SPAMMERS love!

You will need to close it and pretty quick as well! ISP's are starting to crack down major on people who have open relays for mail servers and you may well find yourself on a blacklist if it's not closed.

Haven't dealt with the open relay for a while but if you search in this forum for CLOSE OPEN RELAY you'll probably hit a load of posts that have dealt with the problem and will show you how to do it!

Hope that helps

In Exchange Admin go to the Configuration then Connections ant then Properties page for your IMS.

On the Routing tab select re-route Incoming (if its not already) and make sure all domains that you want to come in to your server are listed in the Routing box. Then click the Routing Restrictions button and select "Hosts and Clients that successfully Authenticate". That will close your Open Relay.

Then you probably have to go to to get your server removed from the list of open relays that some sites use to block email from suspected spammers.

There is a FAQ on that, since ages!
See faq10-1779
