Exchange 5.5 Directory Synchronization Service Question

I've inherited an Exchange org with the following config.

One Exchange site. 5 servers in the site. Two of them are running the Directory Synch service. One has the service turned off. The other two don't even have it listed.

What does this affect and how many need to be running?
