exchange 2k will not send to 2nd or higher MX records

Basically,
I think i saw a fix one time but lost it..
When we send to a certain domain we receive an error stating it tried for 8 hrs and could not deliver in time specified..

I performed a test on the domain using a test mail utility and the first mail server does not respond but the second one does..
So i think i have an issue with my mail server not going to the next mail server in DNS to try to send..
any ideas on a fix for this.. (again i thought there was a patch but not sure)
