Assuming you are talking about Exchange 2010's UM role...
The direct SIP may be an option but it may have some features that do not work 100% using that integration method. Using a Session Manager to go to UM I believe is a supported integration. Using a SIP gateway is definitely the easiest and most widely used method of getting integration to UM.
