I have an exchange 2003 server. I have installed an Exchange 2010 server into the same domain. I followed the setup procedure to have the two exchange server coexist.

I tested the two servers after the install. I could send from one exchange 2003 local account to another exchange 2010 local account and then back.

I then tested an email account move from the Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The move when without a problem ( I thought).

Now I can’t send email between the two servers sending to local accounts. I can send to accounts that are on the same server. Example EX2010 Acct 1 can send to EX2010 Acct 2 and reply back with no problems.

I cannot send from Exchange 2010 acct to any exchange 2003 account, or the other way.

I believe it may by a connector issue but this is my first time setting up exchange and I’m not sure.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

You want to look at the routing group connectors. These control mailflow between 2003 and 2010. There should be a connector going in each direction, with source and target servers defined.

Look at the tools in the Exchange Management Console, such as the mailflow troubleshooter. Also run the best practices analyzer.

Thank you.

After checking the connectors on the Exchange 2003 server I found that the receive connector gets mail from another server that runs GFi Mailessentials.

I have configured the Exchange 2010 server to send (Send Connector) email through the GFI server to the internet and I can send to outside accounts, but not to Local accounts on Exchange 2003. I can send email from the exchange server to a local account if if resides on the sending server. But it will not send email to the local account on the other server.

I would like to be able to phase in the exchange 2010 server by moving mail boxes a few at a time and still be able to receive local email on whatever server holds the mailbox.

Is there a way to do this and not modify the exchange 2003 configuration till its time to decommission it?

We use the GFI for spam filtering and archiving email.

Thank you for you help.

I was able to configure the email server by the creating send and receive connectors on
Exchange 2010 server that point to the Spam filter server and changing the SMTP settings on exchange 2003 to send and receive to exchange 2010.
