Hi everyone, a bit of a novice when it comes to Exchange 2007.

I have been tasked with managing an Exchange Server 2007 system, Exchange is SP1, which is running on Server 2008 SP1.

The question I have is, because Exchange 2007 SP1 does not purge log files, I need to upgrade to SP2. The problem I have is that the disc space is limited to 8Gb due to the log files not getting pruned when a full back up is performed. Do I need to update Server 2008 to SP2 before I update Exchange 2007.

I have Googled a heap and by the looks of things the only thing I need to ensure is that Windows Installer 4.5 is installed.

Any advice would be much appreicated.

Say what? If your transaction logs are not getting truncated, there is something else going on there...

Do I need to update Server 2008 to SP2 before I update Exchange 2007.
The two are independent of each other.

Thanks for replying 58sniper, you're right, something else going on when the logs aren't getting truncated, Exchange was still running at SP1, which didn't support the automatic truncation of logs when the system was being backed up.

I realise that the 2 updates are independant of each other but I wasn't sure if Exchange SP2 required Server 2008 to updated to SP2.

I successfully updated Exchange to SP2, I had to install Windows Installer v4.5, then the Exchange update ran 100%. I ran a full back up and the logs were truncated! Now I have 100Gb+ of space free on the disc, 3 years worth of logs!

Just to reiterate, SP1 fully supported the automatic truncation of log files.

Glad you got it resolved. You should upgrade to Service Pack 3, and Update Rollup 3. You can also then enable the Password Reset Feature.

Above links are to my blog articles on each.
