Hello,

I just have a quick question about running NTBackup on our Exchange 2007 server for doing an "exchange-aware" backup. When scheduling or running the backup, do the mailbox database(s) need to be dismounted, or can the backup run while the database(s) are mounted and the exchange server is online? Thanks.

Brad

Anything that requires you to dismount the mailboxes isn't Exchange aware.

Backup the Information Store.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

To expand on what Pat said, in NTBackup you want to drill down and expand the backup selections near the bottom of the list until you see Information Store. If you are just backing up the mdbdata directory where the databases are stored, that's not an Exchange-aware backup, and you are liable to flood your server with transaction logs. A proper backup will automatically purge the right logs at the right time.
