All-

During the initial install of Exchange 2k7 server, while running setup.com /ps or if I try setup.com /prepareAD.. I immediately get a return response with this ODD error below

c:/users/administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/1/default.htm error..

I have sure that this "path" does exist.. Full control to entire path is there as checked.. I am attempting to run this Exchange 2008 64 bit on a beefed up Windows 2008 64 bit server.

This is an Internet Explorer Script error..

Has anyone seen this at all during an Exchange 2k7 install?
I've run this install on previous projects before and never have I been stumped at the initial installation piece at cmd prompt running setup.exe. or setup.com.

I will stay here all night to figure it out, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know..

thanks

Clear out the temp folder and bounce the box.

Also - you can run all of the schema based commands on a DC if you want.

Cool Pat, giving it a try...

Will get back to you when server has rebooted....

crossing fingers here....

Pat-

cleared temp fldr, bounced box ... same issue sorry to say...

thanks though for giving it a shot.. I have a technet article that states there are bugs with the ISO from the MSDN download site..

even tried ISOBUSTER (new version) for new extraction of ISO but same junk....

jeez
blade

Don't know about any bugs with the MSDN image. I've deployed a ZILLION servers with those images.

Have you tried copying the files to a HD and running it from there?

Hi Pat,

Yes using Isobuster I extracted the files to a folder, dropped down to cmd prmpt where those files are then began to run the setup.com and(or) setup.exe runs...

Actually, let me get more granular... when I run setup.com /ps or setup.com /prepareAD, I immediately get a reply in cmd prompt.. "there was an error with the installer".. no matter how I run setup.com this is the error it brings..

when I run setup.exe from cmd prmpt, I get the EXchange GUI, tells me that my prerequisite stuff is there like PS and .net but when I move the mouse I receive that "Internet Explorer Script" script(c:/users/administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/1/default.htm) error I posted above in this thread..

Doing a little further research brings me to a technet url stating that this error is caused by either a bug with the ISO's and that you should either purchase prerun DVD from MS or run eval copy with our prod key..

You are right though, I it should not fail and knows lots of folks that have used the same extracted ISO files...

something else doesn't jive here...

thanks bud

Get yourself an actual copy of the disk or mount the ISO as a disk rather than extracting it.

Mount it as disk, I dont see that option within Isobuster.. hmm, is it something you can do within a Windows setting.

thanks again

blade

One of my ISO apps at work allows me to mount the ISO as a volume, can't recall which one I use as I haven't touched it in a while. Sorry :)

Pat-

Read your detailed article lastnight on prepping a Windows 2008 server prior to the Exchange 2007 install..

Well sir... you live and you learn because I had not done any of those things (other than having made sure that .net and powershell were components installed on the 2k8 server).

Arghhh! I was so shortsighted on this but will move forward on Tuesday and follow your doc, yes this is entirely different compared to prepping a Windows 2k3 server towards an Exchange 2008 install.

Once I prep the box, do you have an equivalent article thru Petri that goes over the Exch 2008 install itself?

thanks again (for a great article too!!!)

blade

I believe you mean Exchange 2007, not Exchange 2008.

I don't believe I have anything online that details the actual install. Usually when I write stuff like that, it's in books, not online articles. Sorry.

There's one from one of our fellow MVPs Nathan Winters on the command line deployment of Exchange over at msexchange.org from memory.

Hey thanks very much Zelandakh... heading over to it right now..

thanks to all!

Hi Pat-

I copied down the pre-req xml Exchange and used the servermangercmd options, installed like a charm!

question thought. I go to the exchange gui setup and run setup.. make it past the intro page then get stumped at the EULA part... says "end user license not found, cannot continue with setup"...

no ability to choose radio buttons to accept it or anything as they are greyed out... anyway, is there a file I could edit on the system to essentially allow the install to move forward? have you ever seen this before?

thanks for any info at all..

blade

That certainly sounds like a mangled installation point.

When you extracted it, did you extract it to a folder in the root of a drive? I'm wondering if you're running into a patch too long issue.

Pat,

I worked thru it bud.. copied the COMMON folder into the right path -and yes, there were two install points that caused this actually.

hope it runs smooth from this point..

thanks again

Pat-

Well.. long story short. I am still running thru the install process but have gotten further than any other day.

I am stuck at the error "cannot locate Active Directory or a DC for the child domain such and such".

Whats weird is that this server has joined the child domain just fine, I can ping fqdn names to and from the child domain/dc to this server. There is a dns A record for this server on DNS of the child DC etc.

Why doesn't Exchange 2007 installation process see it? I think I am at the CAS, MAILBOX part of the install.....

I ran across some forums discussing running the "setup /PrepareAD switch" this too returns errors concerning DNS..
So it's DNS I assume ... lol but is there an addional prep command I can need to run on the Win2k8 server that I am missing?

any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

blade

Exchange also relies heavily on GC, does the child domain have a GC server? Are your DNS servers that hold the service records listed in the NIC. Are there any errors when you run DCDIAG and NETDIAG.

MCITP:EA/SA, MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, MCTS, MCP+I, MCP

Hi GrimR-

YEs everything looks right except when I run DCDIAG on the child dc, various failed issues here and there..

hey, just a sidebar issue.. when I run setup.com /ps... and also during the exchange install in the gui -one of the errors is that the user is not logged on to a Windows domain... is there a need to add the domain admin acct to any specific Exchange group or do I need to create a specific Exchange group and add an AD admin acct in there??

really need to try and get this moving so any info would be great thanks!!

blade

STOP

If you're getting errors in DCDIAG and/or NETDIAG, then those should absolutely be resolved before doing ANYTHING ELSE.

When installing Exchange, it's assumed that the environment is free from issues.
