I have a child domain controller inside a primary domain controller and I can not get Exchange to install. I get the following error when running a domain prep:

D:\>setup /PrepareAD /OrganizationName:northern-pharmacy

Welcome to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unattended Setup

Preparing Exchange Setup

No server roles will be installed

Performing Microsoft Exchange Server Prerequisite Check

Organization Checks ......................... FAILED
Setup needs to contact the Active Directory schema master but this computer
is not in the same Active Directory domain as the schema master (DC=northernpha
rmacy,DC=com).

Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory:
Exchange organization-level objects have not been created, and setup cannot cre
ate them because the local computer is not in the same domain and site as the sc
hema master. Run setup with the /prepareAD parameter on a computer in the domai
n northernpharmacy and site Northern-Pharmacy, and wait for replication to compl
ete.

The Exchange Server setup operation did not complete. Visit soft.com and enter the Error ID to find more information.

Exchange Server setup encountered an error.

I also get the following error when running the setup inside the child domain. I can ping the primary domain by DNS name but Exchange 07 will not install. Here is the error I get:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchange ADAccess
Event Category: Devices
Event ID: 2152
Date: 5/18/2008
Time: 11:00:23 AM
User: N/A
Computer: EXCHANGE07
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 2152 ) in Source ( MSExchange ADAccess ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ExSetupUI.exe, 1428, 1753, Error 6d9 from HrGetServersForRole.

How do I get this chid domain in the schema master so I can install Exchange 07?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to run domain-prep on the parent domain before you can install on the child domain. The parent domain passes down its schema to the child, and you can't change the child schema. You have to change the parent to prep the child. Make sense?

I did but I get the same error on the primary domain.

You got the "schema master" error, or the event 2152? I assume you got the latter.

Try downloading the 32-bit trial of E2007 on your parent DC and kicking off set up. Go just far enough to run the schema updates, and then quit. Then you should be able to continue your install on the 64-bit system in the child domain.

I'm thinking that running them locally will at least give you a more intelligible error message.

If you have to, run NTDSUTIL and see which DS is holding the schema master role, and run it on that one.

One critical thing to keep in mind is that your AD/DNS needs to be solid before you deploy E2007. I would run DCDIAG in your parent and child domains and deal with any errors you see before moving forward with your E2007 deployment.
