We have a client who's email is hosted at Rackspace and they currently download email using Outlook and pop3, which works ok to a degree but the problem is that their PST files are huge anything upto 20 gig in size and that causes its own problems.

Their HQ is in Canada but the office we deal with has an SBS 2008 box with obviously Exchange built into that which they do not currently utilize at all.

I know we can setup the po3 connector in SBS to download email from Rackspace, but how will mail be dealt with when it is sent out because the SBS server will not be the Authorative mailserver for that domain, that will still be the Rackspace servers.

In "normal" (non-SBS) Exchange, you can specify where to send mail if a mailbox isn't found. However, I don't believe that feature is exposed in SBS.

Run away...20GB into Outlook PST via POP3. Just bad on so many levels.

Skip the SBS and move them to Office 365 instead - at least the architecture will not need managing.

Thanks for the input guys but O365 is not the answer here.

The question is how can I get exchange 2007 (SBS does have full blown exchange) working as a secondary mail server if it is not authorative for that domain?

Why not transfer their email to exchange all together, and get rid of rackspace. A hassle I know, but for I thing I bet they would not mind having on less bill every month.

If that is not an option wouldn't you just have to change the mx record for the out going server.

Also sounds like they need to go through their emails and get rid of the ones like "Going to lunch" kind of emails. 20 gig PST files are way over the top as far as excessive goes.

MX records are for mail delivery (receiving), not outgoing. Your own MX record details where sending organizations send mail to you. Not the other way around.

But I agree - 20GB .pst files aren't ideal. They are fraught with issues.
