Hello,

I have windows 2003 exchange server with 40gb (c:\drive and 260gb e:\drive). This morning I have noticed the c: drive had only 15mb left. The event viewer reporting ID 5007 error and none of my services or exchange can start. I cannot figure out where the space is going.I would be very appreciative of any information you have on this issue.

Thanks,

Theo

HI,

My first suspicion would be log files?

When was the last time you backed up exchange fully?

check

c:\program files\exchsrv\mdbdata

Are there lots of log files in that folder?

I check the c:\program files\exchsrv\mdbdata it has only 3MB of data.

You are right! 34GB is the actual size of log files. What should I do?

First, you should be posting in the correct forum, which for you would be
But to answer your question, you need to backup your Exchange server with an Exchange aware backup program. NTBackup will work, and it's free, or something like Symantec Backup Exec with the Exchange Agent.

Do that, the logs will then flush out automatically, and you're drive space will be reclaimed without any further intervention on your part.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

Thank you Davetoo! In the interim can I delete old log files to free up space without causing any problems?

Thanks,

Theo

Do NOT delete the log files, run a backup as has been suggested by others, the log files will be flushed when the backup has been completed.

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

@theo2k, as previously stated, NEVER manually delete ANY log file starting with E0xxxxx.log, it will kill your exchange

the next thin you have to do is go into your exchange system manaager, drill down to your server (or is it the smtp protocol?!?!) and go into the properties. Look for a field regarding log file location, you have to change that to your larger drive, else you're C:\ drive will quickly get full (depending on how many users). Else you can create a schedele to run every other day or nightly to backup your exchange using ntbackup.

good luck

Do not just move your log file drive to a bigger drive. Properly backup your Exchange server.

If at all possible; after backup :), you need another drive for these log files IF your database .edb files are already on the large E: drive. They should not be on the same partition/drive/raid set for performance reasons.

Same Raid
C: Exchange program files
E: Exchange Database files

new raid set.(if possible)
F: Exchange Database LOG files.

Just a suggestion, take from it what you will.
