I am currently running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 SBS with forms based authentication enabled. All of our users connect to this server using the OWA portal. The issue that will randomly occur seemingly for no reason is IIS, SMTP, IMAP4, Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine, and POP3 services all fail and terminate at once with an event log id of 7000. When this problem occurs you can restart the sever and allow all of the services to restart, but the OWA FB login screen will not appear and give a 500 error, while all other websites remain up and running just fine. After the restart the IIS metebase becomes corrupt.

The fix for this problem to get the server back up and running is one I tried from the Microsoft site that states “uninstall and reinstall IIS, and then do a reinstall of Exchange 2003”. While this does work it does not bring to light of the problem that will sooner or later make this same thing happen again. Since it was dealing with the IIS Metabase I have tried restoring a know good backup that still does not correct the problem. I have checked the server for the Code Red virus and all of its variants, along with any other viruses possible, and feel pretty comfortable this is not it.

Have you applied the latest service pack for 2003? There were some goofy owa issues with the initial release.

58sniper you are correct the SBS server came with Exchange 2000 but we preformed a 2003 upgrade around 2 years ago.

mjgolli, the server has all of the up todate service packs installed on it. I have to do it after each reinstall.

Yes, and even as a test i removed the Anti-Virus at one point and the problem still occured.
