Newbie question.
When I set up exchenge on a server in my DMZ, does that server need to be in the same AD Domain as the backend server and if so which ports on my internal firewall do I need to open?

Thanks
Bowlsys

Yes they have to be in the same AD domain. All the Front-End server essentially does is perform and RPC lookup in AD to find out what back-end server to request the information from.

You will have to allow RPC, and IMAP4 (143 and 993) and POP3(110 and 995) (if you are offering these services). You should not have to setup SMTP on the front-end (it is not recommended).

look at this paper from microsoft:
