We have sucessfully added an Exchange 2007 server to our domain. As a test, I have moved a few mailboxes from the Exchange 2003 to 2007 server. (The ultimate goal is to remove the old 2003 server). Users who have been moved to 2007 start Outlook, everything is fine. The Blackberry Enterprise server (after some reconfig) is able to deliver mail to users who have been moved also. Some users have phones that use ActiveSync. These users can no longer receive mail after they are moved to the new store. The support code on the device error is 0x85010014. It may be that https is required, but I'd rather not have everyone reconfigure the settings on their phones. Also, OWA users cannot access email on the server they're not "on". Is there any way to make both servers act as one, or do I have to move users and reconfigure their settings to point to the new server as I go? Many applications and devices are configured with the old server name. The only way I can think of is to move everyone, remove the old server then create a DNS entry that points the old server name to the new server.

Is there a better way to have the servers work as a "farm" while I move everyone?

OWA (and thus port 443) probably points to the legacy server. You can't proxy to a 2007 mailbox via OWA 2003. You have to do it the other way around. Put the 2007 server facing the Internet - it can proxy for the 2003 mailboxes. But once you do that, 2007 users will be able to use EAS, but 2003 users will not.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

If the devices are configured with the old name, migrate everyone to the new server, follow the "remove last 2003 server from the org" documentation, back the server out of the domain and put an A record in DNS for the old name to the new IP.
