Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2000

Hello,
This would be my first post. I am a PC Technician out of Pennsylvania and I need some insight on how to complete this. Here it is:

I have a client who is running Exchange 2000 on a Dell Poweredge and he is upgrading the server itself but not the software or OS. So my question is: Is the procedure for backing up and restoring the same as if you were going to do an upgrade from Exchange 2000 to 2003 or is it a whole different world?

Any comments, experiences, input shared would be great thanks!
