exchange 2000 stops sending mail

Ok after a few hours exchange 2000 stops sending mail and loads up the x.400 queue. It recieves mail fine. The only way to get the mail to send is to restart the mta stack service. then somethimes it still wont send and you need to restart all of the exchange services. then it will send fine for a couple more hours then all of a sudden jsut stop sending and load up a queue again.
any help???
