I'm trying to installing exchange 2000 on a windows 2000 machine. when I get to the component selection screen and select an action, I get the following error

The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Install" because: - A server object for this server ("Server_name") already exists in the Administrative Group "Domain". You must either remove this server object before installing, or run setup with the "DisasterRecovery" switch if you are attempting to recover this server.

I try running setup with the following switch setup -disasterrecovery this time i get past where i was initially stuck and it starts copying over files and then it stops and I get this error message

Setup failed while installing sub-component system attendant service with error code 0xc0070005.

Has any encountered this before?

Did you have Exchange 5.5 previously in this domain? Or is this a new install of Exchange 2000 into a domain that had no Exchange before?

I'm Certifiable, not certified.

Google the second error you received and read the first few links you find there.

I cant find it right now but i believe you will have to use ADSI edit from the w2k support tools to delete the failed attempt to install ex 2000. Look to the event viewer for more details then go to ms support site and do a search. There is plenty of infomation out there. All else fails try google.

Do you plan on getting rid of the 5.5 server?

thanks for the links, i'm going through them now

once e2k is installed and all the mailboxes are brought over then i'll take down 5.5

This was an upgrade from hell for me. After about 2 weeks and 10 reformat and installs I finally got it. This is just my recommendation but after have fully removed your failed install from AD. as a workaround you can even rename the server that your installing ex2000 on. Anyway run both forestprep and domainprep then wait 24 hours before running the complete setup. This will allow plenty of time for everything to sync and update the schema. On installes that I did not wait 24 hours; when I right clicked on the users name in ad to move the mailbox the option wasnt there. Instead of trying to figure out what was wrong I just reformated and renamed the server and tried again. I highly recommend waiting 24 hours after you run domainprep and forestprep before running the complete setup. Keep us posted on how the upgrade is going.

i'll try that thanks, does it matter how many e2k servers are in a domain
