All,

I have a Windows 2000 Server and would like to install Exchange 2000 server but I have some questions.

1. Will Exchange 2000 Server run in an NT 4.0 enviroment, or does it need to run in Active Directory

2. How difficult is it to upgrade from Exchange 5.5 ( I have an Exchange 5.5 server and would like to replace it with a Exchange 2000 server.

Thanks

1. You do need AD. Exchange 2000 runs very different than 5.5 all the exchange paramaters exist in AD rather than the exchange server.

2. You can't do a direct migration you will need to create your new exchange server and use the migration tools whether you choose the MS ones or 3rd party ones. I chose a 3rd party which worked well during the test migration but went awfull during the real migration.

The upgrade process is not technically difficult however its not as easy as running through the wizard there are a lot of pre-requisists that need to be completed Before even installing the server. If you follow all the steps you shouldn't have any problems and if you have the fact that you need to build a new server you don't have to migrate everyone until you are happy it is running OK.
