I am running Exchange 2000 with Windows 2000 on a Compaq Proliant ML370. The volume which hold the Exchange datafiles needs defraging. Is this something that can be done on live data with the exchange services running or must the services be stopped? This is not a datafile defrag but a volume defrag.

You should not defrag the actual volume that the Exchange data is on becuase there is a good chance it will screw the EDB/STM files up.

If you really need to defrag the volume you would have to take Exchange offline, move the EDB/STM files to another volume, run your defrag and then move the EDB/STMs back in after the defrag is complete.
