Forgive me for not knowing what the exact methodology is called and if this needs to go into the Exchange 2010 forum, please let me know.

I am in the initial stages of a Exchange 2010 upgrade from Exchange 2003. As part of the process, I want to slowly move users to the new server. I would like configure the exchange 2003 server so it is responsible for all mail delivery to the appropriate user mailbox (which ever server the mailbox resides on). Once all users mailboxes are moved over, then I will make the changes to DNS and run solely on the new 2010 server.

what is this methodology called? Can it be done? i don't need exact answers, just a some tips on where to look, etc.

thanks,

Mark C.

As long as you don't create a send connector in 2010 for delivery to the Internet, you should be fine. What should happen then is email sent from 2010 users should go across the Routing Group Connector (RGC) to the 2003 server, then out whatever SMTP connector you have configured there.

it's really that easy? awesome!!! I was worried I had to do some big huge configuration to get this to work.

When I am ready to move all users from the Exch2003 server, would I build the SMTP connector on 2010???

You only need to create an SMTP Send Connector in 2010 when you're ready to have the 2010 server start sending mail directly to the Internet.

I created the SMTP Internet send connector on the Exch2010 server but I am getting all sorts of undeliverable. I cant figure out how to solve.

look at this post to view error:
I thought it has something to do with the FQDN, but I've modified so it matches our public MX record.... still doesnt fix.

for now I've just removed the send connector, but I've got a few users moved over to the Exchange 2010 server...
