I'm running Arcserve 2000 SP4 on Win2000, this backs up files ok on windows servers, including the datastore on Exhange. I'm running Exchange 2000 on another W2K server in the same domain.

I have attempted to make Brick-level backups on the Exchange server: Outlook 97 is installed, the Arcserve Client for MS Exchange installed successfully and the backup account and mailbox configured/authenticated.

I can browse to the individual mailboxes I wish to back up in Arcserve Manager and select them. When I create and start a job, the activity log gives me an error 'RC=5 Access Denied' for all the mailboxes - not one backs up.

The Exchange 2000 MS client is patched up to SP4, as is Arcserve manager (patched directly to SP4, not via SP3).

Has anyone seens anything like this? Could this be an AD rights issue? I'm sorry if I'm asking a daft question, I'm new to Arcserve (met it yesterday!)

Kind Regards

BF

With Exchange 2000 you shouldn't have an Mail client installed on the same machine (ie Outlook) as this can cause Mapi issues.
When submitting a job with ARCserve when Database agents are installed their are 2 security ID's that need to be submitted. I recommend that you use the account you created for exchange bricks level for everything.
Change the ARCserve System Account (In ARCseve Server Admin) to this account. Also change the Backup Agent RPC Server service to this account. Restart all ARCserve related services and retry the backup

Thanks for the tip, I've made progress!

I changed all the ARC-related services on the both the Arcserve server and the MS Exchange box to run as my Arcserve account.

The backup still refuses to go through, but I'm getting an RC=5 in the event log for each and every item inside the mailbox rather than once for the whole box.

Should I give rights to each mailbox in Exchange to the ARC account?

Thanks for your help, I'm very chuffed.

In Exchange System Manager did you delegate control to a mailbox?
The following URL is for ARCserve 9 but has a section to Manually configuring the Exchange Agent for Brick Level Functionality...
The step that I believe is missing is to Open Exchange System Manager, rigth Click at the Top (backup (Exchange)) and select Delegate Control. Add the mailbox that you create...
