I have a computer that generates thousands of .tmp files a month on the "windows\tmp" folder and these files slow down considerably the computer, these files are usually 0 kb or 1 kb in size but there are so many that even deleting them takes a long time, sometimes up to 1 hour. I'd like to know the reason why this particular computer generates them. I suspect Word 97 is the culprit but i'm not certain. The computer is a clone with a 166 MHz processor, 16 MB Ram, 2.0 GB HDD, Win98, Office 97.

Best things I can tell you (and anybody/everybody else):

If a bunch start with fffff, you're probably running Microsoft Findfast. If so, right-click start button, hit Open, dbl-click Programs, dbl-click Startup and delete findfast. What else is in there? Does it need to be? You can safely remove just about anything in there except your virus checker--if it is in there. They should all be shortcuts so you're not deleting programs or anything. If you're nervous about deleting it, create a new folder under programs called STARTUP HOLDING and move all the shortcuts from startup into startup holding (except virus checkers). Doing this can also help your PC shutdown properly. If it hasn't been, that's probably why you have so many temp files.

I close all programs and do start-find-files or folders named: *.tmp,~*.* hit ctrl-a to select them all, and delete them. At least once a week.

Empty out your C:\windows\temp folder often.

Make sure Outlook isn't journaling everything. Go to Tools-options-journal options in Outlook. Make sure all the checkmarks are removed. Journaling everything REALLY slows the pc down.

Check the folder called STARTUP that resides in the Office folders. Move anything out of there too (at least temporarily). Start Excel and see if you have any add-ins turned on (Tools-Addins). If so, deselect them. Most average users don't use them regularly and you can turn them back on whenever you need to. Meanwhile it could be slowing down Excel's launch time.

Reboot your PC. After all that, I'd run a scandisk and a defrag, and reboot again and see if it gets any better.

Good luck!

dreamboat@nni.com
<a href=
You need more RAM installed!!! The machine should have 64MB.
David J. Aller
GoTech@GoTechnologiesInc.com
<a href= Computer Systems & Networking Services
I try to share some of my knowledge and experience with others, and also have picked-up many
tips from reading other postings.
I agree with Dave. The memory is substandard for Win98 (with Office).

Assuming the age of your motherboard from the speed of the processor (166), you may have a hard time finding 64mb of SIMMs to fit. A little more would be much better.

One of my test computers is a Cyrix 166 with 24mb RAM, running Win98 SE. The sucker flies! But it isn't bogged down by the Office overhead.

Office places many burdens on the system. Try Dave and Dreamboat's suggestions. If they don't solve the problem you may need to perform a more extensive hardware upgrade (e.g. pull the hard drive and install it in a newer computer).

I'm sorry if my answer sounds harsh. Your software was never meant to run on your hardware. You can force it to run but it will never like it.

<a href= temporary Vorpalcom home page
Send me suggestions or comments on my current software project.

More memory.

All MS Office Applications create a temp file when you create or open a file. If that application is not closed properly then the temp files will remain in the folder. To fix this close all applications properly, this was the temp files will be deleted. Check your temp files weekly. If you see any files that do not have the current date next to them delete them.

Joe
