At my shop we started using Narrowcaster a few month ago. Our busiest day is Sunday when 30 or so services create and send out 3 to 4 thousand emails with Excel attachments. We noticed that occasionally Narrowcaster becomes unresponsive and sort of 'hangs' for an hour or two before proceeding with the next service. Sometimes service just ends (no errors) without sending anything. Our Narrowcaster is installed on NT server with 4 processors, 2GB of physical and 4GP virtual memory. While trying to pinpoint the cause of these problems we turned on Performance Monitor. The results were surprising. Over 8-hour monitoring window % Total Processor Time averaged about 60%. Use of the pagefile was low (pages/sec). The number that was way higher than expected was page faults/sec. We averaged 50,008 page faults/sec with picks up to 70,000. This must result in substantial CPU overhead caused by the NT Virtual Memory Manager becoming involved and context switches.
Does anybody know what can be done to improve performance? We are planning to move to Windows 2000 server in the near future. Will Narrowcaster perform better on Win2K machine? Any responses are aprreciated.
