Excell find how many times a name appears in cells

Is there a formula where it will search through a selected area and return how many times that entry appears in the seclected area.
Example
Find how many times the word John appears in a selected area.
The cell where the forula is in will return the ammount of times it appears

=COUNTIF(J13:J262,"Correct!&quot
=COUNTIF(range,phrase)

Perfect....
Am also wanting to do it by a date range. From the 6/2/2001 to 22/6/2001..
Is their any way of running asearch and fidinghow many times it appears?

Tried a number of different ways, but this is the only way I could get it to work :
1) Data range is A13:J262
2) Criteria range is A1:C2
3) There is a heading of "Date" and "Phrase" above the appropriate columns.


Date Date Phrase
>=6/2/2001 <=6/22/2001 Correct

=DCOUNTA(A13:J262,1,A1:C2)
