To use Excel properly, you should have:
First row is column headings
Second row is data
No completely blank rows
No completely blank columns
Save your file to a new name and remove your subtotals, please. Excel will do this for you.
Now, click anywhere in your data. Hit Data-Subtotals. You should be able to understand the dialog box that comes up. Hit Ok.
After you have "turned on" subtotals, look to the left of the letter A (for column A). You will see "1-2-3" Click on the 2 for subtotals, and click on the 1 for grand total. Click on the 3 for detail with subtotals.
To remove subtotals, hit Data-Subtotals-Remove all.

I'm not sure I understand the need to remove subtotals?
If one uses =SUBTOTAL(9,Range)to calculate subtotals
and then uses =SUBTOTAL(9,AllRange) to calculate GrandTotals, all cells with the SUBTOTAL formula will not be included in the GrandTotal (sort of the opposite of Lotus).
What am I missing?

Nothing JV. I'm assuming that, like most, she's got some rows and then a blank row with a subtotal, maybe, but not using the subtotal function.
Most people don't know how to use the subtotals feature, so I tell them. I think it's easier...
