i need to convert dollars to pounds. i want that the cell where i enter the dollar amount should automaticall show me the equivalent pound amount.

With the dollar amount in column A, enter the following
formula in column B: =A1*.685941

Be aware that the exchange rate is always changing. The
current exchange rates can be found at
 
A little bit better way so you don't have to change your formula everytime the exchange rate changes.

Put the exchange rate in any cell on your worksheet. Click on the cell and hit Insert-Name-Define and type: ExchRate

Change vbMax's formula to read:

=A1*ExchRate

Then, when the rate changes, just enter the new Exchange rate into that same cell.

You can further automate this if you know the person will have web access... create a web query that will get the data off a web-page whenever the workbook is opened, and use a look-up query to grab the current exchange rate off of the data that comes back.
