I am writing a report in Crystal Reports Professional (8.50.217), accessing an Excel spreadsheet via ODBC. Whilst I am able to display the fields in the Detail section of the report, there are a number of anomalies. For example, when I access the Record Selection Formula Editor the Excel Table Name is displayed with a + sign to its left, however clicking on the + sign does not display the fields. The MS Excel ODBC driver is 4.00.4202.00. This problem occurs on a workstation running Excel 2000, but does not occur when using the same Excel spreadsheet and Excel 97. What is causing this problem?

It probably is reading these fields as memo fields, which prevents their use for selection. In design, put your cursor over the field and see if the tool-tip gives you a data type. Ken Hamady

Ken,

Thank you for your response.

You have certainly pointed me in the right direction, however I still have not resolved the problem. The fields in Crystal Reports are memo, and in Excel the fields are text. On further investigation I have no problems with Excel fields that are date or numeric. So, I believe, the question is now: why are these Excel fields being treated as memo and not string?

To reinforce: these fields in Crystal Reports are being treated as string on PCs at one site, but at another site these fields are being treated as memo. Yet I cannot determine the difference between the environments. Any suggestions?

either different versions of Excell or (more likely) different version of the Excell ODBC driver. Ken Hamady
