i had the same problem so i created a custom toolbar instead of custmising an existing one. i realise there are about sixty billion different network configurations and so it may not work for everyone, but it worked for me.

Customizing the Excel toolbar may create a UserName.xlb file on the PC. See if you have one after customizing. Then see if it's still there when you restart. Anne Troy
No such file exists. Here's another hint: I can change the toolbars in Word and they become permanent, but not in Excel. Also, my co-worker, with a similar system, can change it!!
There must be some settings somwhere...
