Excel to visio and back

Visio will write an excel spreadsheet with all of the shape properties. I need to export a drawing to excel change some of the data to formulas and recreate the drawing.

How do I do this?

I have already tried the TOOLS MACRO IMPORT (this only works with predefined templates) and INSERT OBJECT. Niether one of these worked.
