I have one user that is having a problem with Excel. It is very, very slow when it comes to both opening files and printing files which are stored on a network drive. If I create a new document and store it on her hard drive, it is not a problem.
I have opened the same network drive files from other PC's and they open immediately, and print as they should (not three minutes later.) I have opened/printed Word documents, as well as photos, that are located on the same network drives, without a problem, as well as printing out a very large Contact list in Outlook(stored on Exchange server).
I have had this user log on at other machines(as themselves, of course) and they are able to access and print with out a problem.
Some of the steps I have taken to correct the problem are:
1. Un-installed Office 97 and installed Office 2000 Profesional.
2. Increased RAM from 64 to 128 (with a "very slight" improvement).
3. Scanned for viruses, including running both the Nimda A and Nimda E strain removal tools.

Thanks for reading this long post.

There could be several reasons for this problem. Have a look at one/all of the following:

1. Check her network card settings, or it may be something to do with her machine's settings that is causing the slow network issue.

2. Check her network cable/connector. These things have a habit of going wrong, but not so dramatically as to think they are the problem (you can check the performance of the network in relation to this machine by using network monitors etc).

3. Make sure she is using the same printer driver as those people that are not suffering from this problem.

4. Make sure that you have deleted all .tmp ~*.* files from the drive. If she has a lot of temp files, it may be causing the system to work harder (this *sort* of ties in with the marginally improved performance when you added more memory)

Have a go at those.....

Thanks Hasit. I forgot to mention that I even replaced the NIC.
I will remove the .tmp files, but do you think only Excel network files would be affected by them? By the way, I did copy a file that is saved on the network drive to the local hard disk, and it still was slow. I then copy/pasted the info from ONE of the worksheets in the local disk file to a Word file and it opened/printed fine. I then copy/pasted the contents of the Word document back in to a NEW Excel file, and it was slow opening/printing.
These files (there are 100's of them) are probably 6 or 7 years old, updated as newer versions of Excel have been available. If it ain't broken, play with it till it breaks.

OK, so the card seems to be OK. I can only think that the contents of the files are whats causing the problem, but that would not make sense if those very same files can be opened by others with no problem.

Let me think about this one....
