Hi folks,

I´m having some trouble with my server farm (6x W2k server + SP4 german on HP DL380s, configured as terminal servers) running Citrix Metaframe XPe FR3. Also there are some more servers like the file server, print server and so on. I don´t think it has something to do with Citrix, because I´ve seen this problem on systems not running Citrix as well.

When a user tries to open an excel document (Office 2002) which is located on a network drive (on the file server) he sometimes encounters an error saying that the document is in use by another person.
It doesn´t happen all the time, just now and then.
In terms of migrating a NT domain to a W2k AD domain we used one specific admin account.
When I look into the permission settings for these files (on that network drive/file server), I only see that user and the group "domain admins" as owner.
Every time someone calls me about that problem, they always tell me, they are getting this error saying...
and it´s always the admin account wich we used to transfer all data to the new file server. So for some reason the system thinks, that the user "admin account" is viewing the files, wich he is not!
I have heard of problems of such kind when "SMB signing" is turned on (default). Have turned it off, but am still getting this error. (on wich server do I have to alter these settings?)
Can someone please help me out here? I really don´t know where to look any more...

Thanks a lot

Cheers
Damien

HI Damien, I know of similar issues that we had on our system, we migrated from a peer-to-peer running office 2000 to a Domain with all clients running office XP.

We found that when users were closing the office files they had open the temp file that is generated was not disappearing, a short term fix is to find this temp file (which is in the same directory as the genuine file and usualy hidden)and delete, this should allow your users access for a while.

As for a long term fix we did find one, however i cannot remember for the life of me what it was, i think we may have run office updates on all our client PC's, it was a fix in SP1.

Let me know if this works, in the means time i will try and think of another solution we may have used.

I also had a similar issue with one of my clients. On your 2000 server, make sure you have SP4 installed. This service pack fixed resolves that issue.

Help! I've fallen and I can't reach my beer.

SP4 is installed on all servers.
I have heard of a M$ patch for this issue. Can´t remember where i saw it. Does someone know of this patch?

THX

All this talk of SP's and patches has got the old noggin ticking over again.

The fix we tried was issued under Q309376 and was to do with 'Opportunistic Locking'.

As far as I'm aware this patch was included within SP4. You may be able to find the fix in another microsoft Win2k download on thier site. If you're still getting the same problem you could try a windows Update.
