Not sure whether I should post this in the Office forum or here. Hopefully here is more applicable.
We're running an intranet and keep our important company forms on pretty little pages. The company is growing in an ad hoc fashion so we're implimenting some security features a little later than we should in an ideal world. One of those features is locking down the stinking permissions so users can't do things like save over the purchase request form with what they just entered.
I can lock down the directories so that people can read word docs but cannot save them unless they are in the specific group that is supposed to be editing that folder. That works fine. However, when I try accessing excel files, I get the following error:
Excel cannot access 'filename.xls' Thie document may be read-only or encrypted.
The folder is set to read-only. Why would this prevent someone from opening a copy of the xls file in read-only, especially when word docs handle it just fine?
Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks.
