This is likely an easy question, but I can't figure it out and its very annoying. I have some toolbars that I dont want to show in excel, each time excel opens I go to view-> toolbars and uncheck the ones I dont want but everytime I reopen excel the are back no matter if its a new blank sheet or a worksheet I have saved. Also I have under tools -> options unchecked the 'update remote referances' in the calculation tab, yet each time I open Excel it tries to update remote referances and the box is rechecked in the tools-> option box. How do you get this preferances to stay?

These are set in the .xlb file that currently exists on the pc.
Do a find for files with the extension .xlb
When you find it, rename it so that .xlb is .old
Now, you should be able to set your preferences and they'll "stick" in the newly created .xlb

That didn't work, renamed the file opened excel closed the toolbars and file->exit, but next time I opened excel the same toolbars were still there.
