Excel scrolling gets stuck on horizontal

I have Excel 2003. Normally the mouse wheel causes vertical scrolling, which is usually what I want. Occasionally it switches to horizontal, and I can't get it to go back without closing Excel and starting again.

Using SEARCH I found some threads which mention this. I get the 'intelligent scroll' function when I press on the wheel. But afterwards it reverts to horizontal scrolling.

What am I doing wrong? Please let me know.

(I can of course scroll vertically using the scroll bar etc., but the wheel is very convenient when it works.)

Your mouse driver probably has setting for Alternate scrolling; you need to remove it if selected. Else, I would suggest updating or re-installing the mouse driver.

I thought I had retired...I was mistaken. I used to work for a large corporation; now I work for my wife.

I checked 'Mouse' on Control Pannel and found no Alternate. Also this is a specific problem that Excel gets into.

On my system, shift + scroll wheel moves horizontally.

Maybe you've got a stuck shift key, your elbow on it or your cat is hunting your mouse? :)

On my system, shift + scroll wheel does nothing, unfortunately. Thanks for trying to help, though.

This may be very simple, but have you tried holding the ALT key and pressing the wheel?

I've not tried that. I'll do so next time the fault occurs, and let you know. Thanks for trying to help.
