Can I open an excel spreadsheet in Calc, work on it, and save it again in the .xls format? Sorry for sounding stupid, but I'm used to excel. Friend doesn't want to spend the money on Microsoft. Thanks.

Of course, you are free to use your old Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, or save your work in Excel format for sending to people who are still locked into Microsoft products.
