When applying page numbers to an excel worksheet I get the following error messages :-

Excel caused a general protection fault in module krnl386.exe at 0001:0000183e

Excel caused a general protection fault in module hpw8ddI.dre at 0005:00006330

we are using excel 2000 9.0.2720. Has anybody any idea's?
microsoft and hp appear not to have.

General Protection faults is the catch all for Windows if it cannot isolate the fault to be something specific.

The error may be nothing to nothing to do with krnl386. It just so happens that thats the program that discovered the problem and therefore reported it.

One thing to check: does the error come up with the same memory reference (i.e. 0001:0000183e)? If it does, there may be something wrong with the memory in that machine.

Have a look at this as it seems to be in the area of your problem:

If that doesn't work, try and resolve the protection fault, have a look at:

As for the driver fault, you may consider uninstalling the driver until you can get Excel to work without causing a problem in the krnl386 file.
