I have a spreadsheet that takes 2 minutes to open, and the same to display a cell whose formula is merely a link to another cell in a different work sheet, i.e. Sheet2!A1=Sheet1!A1. The result does not display, but only the formula, until I place the cursor to the right of the formula and hit enter, effectively a second time. Two minutes later, my result. There must be either a lot of calculating or something approaching a circular reference/link somewhere, but I have not been able to identify it. Excel does not crash, but is there anyway I can view what is going on here?
Tnx,Tom

To understand how much calc time, use CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+F9

This will completely recalc the workbook - if it takes 2 mins its probably because there's lots of formulae

To check for circular references, follow View>ToolbarsCustomise and tick "Circular Reference" - see what the toolbar tells you

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

Actually, the only references are to other worksheets within this one workbook.
And I have turned off calculation, as far as I know. Any moving around at all, anything in this workbook file, is turning it and everything else on my computer, including screen redraws, into absolute molasses. I'm going to have to give up on this file, but I would like to know where to look, to see what element in it might be deleted to regain some control over it!

To try to keep the workbook from being so sluggish, you could go to go to Tools > Options and on the View tab, check the box beside Formulas in the bottom section. (The keyboard shortcut for this is [Ctrl] + [`] where [`] is the un-shifted character for the [~] key - on a standard US keyboard it is at the top left of the keyboard, to the left of [1]).

You could also try Tools > Options and on the Calculation tab make sure that the top section is set to Manual.

The file could be corrupted. I've had good success recovering corrupted files by opening them in Open Office*, then re-saving them as an .xls file.

* Open Office is an free open-source office suite. It is safe and doesn't contain any spyware/malware. It is available for free download at
